Malignant Tumors Among Young Adults


Abstract
A statistical analysis was made of 103 cases of various malignancies among Korean youth aged from 16 years to 30 years, who was admitted to the Department of General Surgery, Seoul National University Hospital, in the period of 5 years from January 1958 through 1972.
1) Among 957 various malignancies admitted to the Department of General Surgery, Seoul National University Hospital, during the same period, malignancies in the age group between 16 and SO years old were 103 cases giving an incidence cf 10.8%.
2) Male to female was 1.5 to 1.
3) Age distribution was as follow; 25 cases (24.3%),between 16 years to 20 years, 30 cases. (29. 1%) between 21 years to 25 years, and 48 cases (46.6%) between 26 years to 30 years.
4) The over-all frequency of various malignancies was in the order of gastric. carcinoma (23.3 %), thyroid carcinoma (18.4%), malignant lymphoma (17.5%), rectal cancer (10.7%) soft tissue tumor (8.7%), hepatoma (6.8%), cancer of the small imtestine (2.9%) etc.
In male the order of frequency was gastric carcinoma, rectal cancer, malignant lymphoma, soft tissue tumor, etc. While in female it was thyroid carcinoma, malignant lymphoma, gastric carcinoma, hepatoma, and so on.
5) Among more frequently encountered malignant tumors in this age group compared with general population were thyroid carcinoma, malignant lymphoma, cancer of small intestine, and soft tissue tumor.
6) Clinical observation and review of gastric carcinoma, thyroid carcinoma, malignant lymphoma and rectal cancer were done.
